Title: THE DARKEST LINK
Author: Scarlett Cole
Series: Second Circle Tattoos #4
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Pub. Date: August 30, 2016

Synopsis:

When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle...and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist. He's the perfect candidate for a mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one-night stand.

Reid left his life in Chicago far behind him and hasn't been back, but he's never been able to escape the guilt he feels about his own painful role in inviting a monster into his baby sister's life. A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn't feel he deserves, and their one night together has him wanting more than he should. When he surprises her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami, he's in for a shock—and a fist to the face—when his past and present collide.

With secrets coming to the surface, Reid and Lia are thrown into a world of betrayal and lies that threatens to pull them under, and the last link to his former life may be the darkest of them all.

“What is this?” she asked, running her hand over the elongated hood.
“A 1958 Ford Thunderbird. It was a shell when I bought it. Was found in an unused barn with a bunch of other old classics.”
The wheels were black with white faces, and the soft top was a creamy white. Reflections from the chrome cast light onto the white walls.
“I love it,” she said, excited to sit inside.
“Hood up or down?” Kenny asked, slipping her cases into the trunk.
“Oh, most definitely down,” Lia said. Screw the victory rolls, she could always put her hair into a high ponytail and add the red ribbon she had in her purse if her scarf failed. She reached into her bag to find it and tied it around her head.>
“I like this,” Kenny said, fingering the knot under her chin gently. The way his eyes crinkled at the corners made her feel all kinds of gooey inside. Perhaps it was a good thing they lived a long drive away from each other. His very presence made it difficult to remember why she was taking some time off from men. But a little harmless flirtation was adding to the adventure of a few days off work. There couldn’t be any harm in that.
Once inside the car, Kenny took her hotel details and plugged them into his phone. “There are few downsides to the classics, but lack of sat-nav has to be one,” he said, turning the radio on. “Ready?”
“I feel like Thelma and Louise about to drive over the edge of the cliff,” she said with a laugh.
“Close. That was a 1966 Ford Thunderbird, eight years younger than this baby. Does that make me J.D.?”
“That depends. Are you planning on driving me to a motel, having your wicked way with me on the dresser, then stealing my life savings?”
“I know a motel, don’t know if they have a dresser, but more than willing to do a drive-by to find out.”
Lia laughed. “I was joking.”
“I wasn’t. Say the word, Red.”
He revved the engine several times, the low growl sexy as all hell, and grinned as he roared out onto the street. Lia watched his hand as he shifted the stick. He caressed the gear stick. The more she stared, the more turned on she became until she had to cross her legs and look out of the window.
Damn him for getting her so hot and bothered. She spared a glance back toward him, just as he turned to face her. And he winked. Because he knew.
And that just turned her on even more.

Review:

(I received a copy from Mark My Words Book Publicity in exchange for my honest review)

Unbreakable by Liz Long is the final book in the Heroes of Arcania trilogy.
I'm so happy to have been given the chance to read the entire trilogy and Unbreakable gives a strong finish.

This book starts off immediately after the end of the 2nd book, Fortune's Favor, where Cole was taken by the Transporter to an unknown location while Fortune has given his bomb to Nova and thrown her off the building.

The rest of the story continues with Fortune playing his games with Nova and Nova trying hard to protect everyone she loves. Cole got the chance to further his Timekeeper skills and we really see him grow into the man he will one day be. Penelope has also learnt to control her powers and make important decisions as to when and where to use them. Henry proves his worth to his friends while he pushed away his notions of reporting every single thing in the school newspapers.

In the end, of course the good comes out triumphant while evil is defeated. I'm very pleased to say we get a happy ever after ending and I love the entire trilogy and the characters that Liz Long has created.

Book review - Refuse by Joanne Macgregor

Everyone wants Jinxy, except the one she loves.

In a near-future USA decimated by an incurable plague and tightly controlled by a repressive government, teenagers with special skills are recruited and trained to fight in the war against terror.

Now a rebellion is brewing.

All sixteen year-old expert sniper Jinxy James wanted was a little freedom, but now she’s trapped between the government and the rebels, unsure of who the real enemy is. When she uncovers appalling secrets and twisted motivations, Jinxy begins to question her allegiances. Soon she will need to choose between love and freedom, as she struggles to do the right thing in a world gone horribly wrong.

** spoiler alert **

(I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review)

Refuse by Joanne Macgregor is the second book in the series and it picks up straight after Recoil ended with a cliffhanger. At the end of Recoil, Jinx has tranq-darted Connor (her boyfriend Quinn's brother) and helped Quinn to escape, while getting herself captured. She was taken to an interrogation centre and things got nasty there. While she was there, she discovered that Connor was also at the same facility and somehow she managed to find and memorise the location's address.

After Jinx's thorough interrogation, she was released to go back to ASTA. She's seen what they are capable of but decided to stay and find out more about ASTA and the government. She also managed to get Connor's location out to the rebels, not without help though. She made an unlikely alliance with Sofia, who was in the same Intel unit as Quinn, and together they discovered several things that made Jinx decide to leave ASTA for good.

Jinx really misses Quinn and knowing he was somewhere safe with the Rebels, she decided to reach out and join them. She was not welcome at the Rebels camp but the leader Zonia decided Jinx is useful with her Sniper skills. Quinn was still mad at her for darting his brother but after a long while they found their way back together again.

Zonia used Jinx's brother Robin to threaten Jinx to do her bidding but Jinx refused. Jinx knew how much everyone at the Rebels camp hated her (except Quinn) and knew she was putting them, especially Quinn, in danger by being there.

At the end, something happened to Robin and Jinx was forced to once again face ASTA and the government. This time, Jinx has decided there is to be no more running away and she will face them bravely, with Quinn by her side.

I absolutely loved Refuse and alongside Recoil, these are becoming my top books of 2016. And Joanne Macgregor is such a talented writer with an excellent style that I love; she's fast becoming one of my favourite authors too!

Book review - Blood and Sin by Laura Thalassa and Dan Rix

Hot-blooded, prideful, feral, Lana Malesuis is a demon. She has sworn an oath to heal her war-torn, dying species. Her method: drain human blood, use it to fuel her dark magic, reap human misfortune. She has come to the town of White Sulfur Springs to cull.

Cold-blooded, ruthless, conniving, Jame Asher is a human. He has sworn to avenge his wife and baby girl, killed by demon magic. His plan: destroy demons’ portals, deprive them of their human blood supply, exterminate them one by one. He has come to White Sulfur Springs to kill.

But when they meet, and he takes Lana as his prisoner, the last thing he expects to see in her wild violet eyes is the frightened innocence of a young girl. For her part, Lana never expects to feel anything but hate for the most feared demon hunter on Earth.

Neither of them expected it to become something more.

(I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest review)

Wow... just wow! That was a powerful ending!

Blood and Sin is the first book I've read by Laura Thalassa and Dan Rix. I wasn't sure what to expect but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

Blood and Sin is told from both Lana's and Asher's POVs. Lana is an infernari from Abyssos while Asher is a human, an infernari hunter.

Asher has been hunting infernari for years and even more so in the past two years since tragedy struck his family. Lana is a healer, she's very different to the other infernari who is mostly about death and destruction. Her natural instinct is to heal and she doesn't kill, ever.

Asher and Lana are the last persons you would expect to cross paths, and yet they have and they got themselves stuck together running away from other infernaris out to kill Asher. They became closer and closer and in the end something happened that left us all hanging. I really hope to see more of Asher and Lana in the next book!
